Guild I rolled with in the day would use Rock, Paper, Scissors as a way to grant loot to someone who needed it. The scenario this usually occurred would be when two or more people in the group needed the drop or were looking for it, but someone in the group who didn't need it or wasn't hunting for it would pick the item up and the people who needed it would play for it.
